Anything but Minor by Kate Stewart5 stars!!“I may have just peed a little.â€Kate Stewart has given me the impossible task of trying to convey in words just how perfect this book is. This is BY FAR my favourite book of 2016 by a country mile. Everything about this book was romantic comedy at its best, hilarious, romantic, swoony, sexy, fun, flirty and just so darn perfect. I had tears of laughter and I mean streams of tears, belly laughs and a stitch many, many times. The heroine is to die for, my favourite heroine EVER. I want to be Alice, I loved her that much. But, Anything but Minor can also tick the boxes for those looking for a sports romance too, our hero in this book is a baseball player.Alice has left her controlling mother behind, finally. This book starts with Alice leaving her hometown and embarking on a whole new adventure on her own in Charleston. Never having been out from under her mother’s apron strings Alice makes the most of her new life and wants to see new things and try new things mostly with catastrophic, hilarious results. Our Alice though is a nerd, she has beauty and brains and is a trained pilot and a Kelly McGillis Top Gun type flight instructor for Boeing, but the poor girl is a klutz. Alice though is totally endearing, there is nothing not to love about her. She has an hilarious addiction to Google, 80’s movies, useless trivia and when nervous may pee herself. But I loved her with a passion, her personality was truly infectious. Alice made this book for me and as I said above, best heroine EVER!“I’ve been in the air, gentlemen, and often. If you want to compare swords with me, simply open up your packet and take a look at my flight log. I don’t need your respect but I do need your attention.â€It is while embarking on something new that Alice finds herself at a baseball game and starts chatting to the lady sitting next to her called Dutch. Dutch is an old lady and is well versed in all things baseball and she takes Alice under her wing. It is here that Alice first catches a glimpse of Rafe Hembrey and she is immediately captivated.Rafe “Bullet†Hembrey is the star pitcher and is on the cusp of making it to the big leagues. His team know the call up is going to come anytime as he pitches perfect game after perfect game. Rafe has lived and breathed baseball since he was three years old, it is his love and passion and the only thing he has ever wanted. Rafe nearly got that chance a couple of years ago but it was cruelly taken away from him, but this is his year and in all fairness probably not the best time to embark on a new relationship, or should I say his first relationship. But just as Alice is captivated by Rafe, Rafe is just as enamoured with her…could this be the start of something beautiful?“You aren’t ready for the real.â€Rafe’s reputation as a ladies’ man precedes him so he has his work cut out to prove his sincerity towards Alice, but it is this slow build, their friendship first and foremost and that eventual move to more that really captures the essence of this book. Rafe works his socks off to capture Alice’s affections giving us some truly magical, memorable moments. I totally adored this couple, I was championing them along from the start.“You gave me my movie moment…stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold.â€Kate Stewart has truly shown her sense of humour with Anything but Minor and I am totally blown away by her talent, is there nothing that this woman cannot write? I adore Kate Stewart’s emotional, angsty books, I can always rely on her to make me cry a river, but for her first attempt at romantic comedy…she nailed it and made me cry a river for a totally different reason. I cannot remember ever having laughed so hard over a book, my kids thought I was crazy as did the people in the supermarket and on the school run, dinner may have been late so I could finish but at the end of the day, I couldn’t put it down. It was that addictive, captivating and all-consuming.“Don’t you dare pee on my floor!â€I loved the side characters, they all had their parts to play and their little side stories were just as captivating. I highlighted a tonne, not just one liners, but total scenes that all shone for either their comedic genius or their emotional pull on every heart string. I found myself swooning one minute and then crying with laughter the next, such was the brilliance of Kate Stewart and her fantastic play in flip flopping emotions and lightening a scene when you least expected it.“Minutes later, a text from him came over. It was a picture of a praying mantis with no head. The tagline read “Was it good for you?â€There was nothing I didn’t like about this book, it is easily one of my favourite Kate Stewart books and is definitely my favourite RomCom and has zoomed straight to the top of my favourite reads of 2016 and…one of my favourite books…EVER. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. This will be one book I will be re-reading and re-reading, whenever I feel low, or unhappy I am sure Alice will become my staple go to, to make it “the best day of my life.†Kate Stewart, you are a genius.
Anything but Minor is one of those books that has it all. It’s laugh out loud funny, sweet, swoony and steamy. Nothing is better than finishing a book and thinking ‘I loved everything about this,’ and that’s exactly what I thought after I finished this book. AbM is a sports romance, a romantic comedy, and it has one of my favorite tropes- where the ‘nerdy’ girl gets the cool guy.Alice has left Ohio for a new adventure in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina. She is a pilot/flight instructor at a new place in Charleston. Alice truly is up for an adventure and wants to explore her new city. Which is how she meets minor league baseball player, Rafe Hembrey.Alice finds herself at a local baseball game sitting next to a woman named Dutch when she first sees Rafe play. She is enamored with him at first sight, and he notices her, too. Later when she goes for drinks at a local bar, Rafe is there. I would love to say these two hit it off from the start, but that wouldn’t be 100% truthful.Rafe ‘Bullet’ Hembery is a local sports star. He had his chance to go to the majors when he was younger, but he couldn’t take it. This is his year. This is the year everyone knows it will happen for him. This is not the year he needs to start a relationship. Rafe knows he needs to focus on his game, but how can he possibly do that with Alice around? Not only is she beautiful, but she’s smart, quirky and fun.Watching things progress between these two was so much fun. I loved the beginning moments where they’re just starting to get to know each other. I loved seeing their relationship grow into so much more than just fun and flirty friendship. I loved it all.Rafe and Alice’s love story was magical- and comical. I can’t count how many times I laughed during this story. It was so much more than just a funny book, though. I fell in love with these characters. And it wasn’t just the main characters. There were a plethora of side characters that were so fantastic and added so much to the story. Andy, Dutch, Kristina, Alice’s mom.Rafe Hembrey is a wonderful hero, but I can’t help but share my love for all things Alice. To me, she stole the show. Alice is a hoot. Her crazy antics made me laugh non-stop. I loved her addiction to google, 80’s movies and her nervous tendencies. She really went out of her comfort zone to try something new and I admired that about her. I truly loved her outlook on life and how she was determined to make every day her best day. Alice really is the best!With Anything but Minor, Kate Stewart proved that she really can write anything. Emotional stories, angsty books, erotica, and now- sports romance/comedy. I love all her books, but AbM is by far one of my favorites of hers. If you’re looking for a story to fall in love with that has the best heroine ever, a wonderful hero, and lots of laughs and love- this is one I highly recommend!
