In reality, though, their terror began in 1391, the Visogoths forced all,the Jews to convert or die. Many Jews chose to convert . Some Jews survived by fleeing to another kingdom but as the years rolled by the antisemitism would,catch up and they would face pogroms. Between the years 1391 to 1492 the Jews would face several outburst of antisemitism.Much of the antisemitism was Church inspired and rhe peasantry were the ones who carried out the violence. Sometimes the nobility would try to protect them but to no avail , the mob rules. Jews who converted to Catholicism were known by several names Marrano (pigs), conversos and Anusim . Once convert they went to church and outwardly tried to be the best Christians possible. Inwardly though many Anusim continued to practice whatever Judaism they could at home and practice Christianity on the outside. Conversos were never fully accepted. The neighboring Chrisitisns regard them with suspicion . In fact conversos never got much of a Christian education any wonder they practiced their Judaism. Many were accused of Judaizing.The book examines rabbinical,attitudes toward the Anusim and how the other Jews interacted with them. Never quite fitting in once they left many would make an open return while,others would hide. The hiding continues to is day with many in Latin American countries claiming descent from Anusim. Gaining acceptance into,e Jewish community has many challenges and the Jewish community has a variety of ways it responds.
Fantastic book that covers the rise of the Inquisition, the Inquisition itself and the effects it had on the Sephardic Jews of Spain and Portugal. There was no clear identity among the Jews forced to convert to Christianity. Some who left Spain and Portugal returned to Judaism, some who left Spain and Portugal could never adapt back into their former culture. Some chose to never leave. This book is a must read for people who have anousim ancestry so you can be completely and correctly informed.
This is a well-written and well-researched book on the fate of Spanish Jewry. I purchased it because of my interest in the Sephardic background to Spinoza's thought, and I was not disappointed: it turned out to be just what I was looking for and confirmed my hunch that Spinoza's famous advocacy of religious toleration had everything to do with his Sephardic background. That is only one of many topics touched on in this learned book, which traces its subject down to the present day and the fascinating subject of the crypto-Jews of New Mexico and other former parts of Spain's empire in the New World. Hats off to Juan Marcos Bejarano Gutierrez for his learned, balanced, and compendious treatment of a complex subject with ramifications across many languages, cultures, and centuries.
The author presents a detailed history of Jews in Spain with the focus primarily on the anusim, Jews forced to convert to Christianity. Well researched, Gutierrez offers striking information, elaborates on the results of the conversions, the different levels of destruction the forced conversions brought forth, and the ways the Jewish communities made effort to repair and reincorporate their Jewish brethren.Worth reading.
Interesting. The debate whether someone can become a Jew after being a 'Crypto-Jew revels a fundamental strand running though most religions. Can someone come back when they left? And do they really believe, or is just monetary gain they seek for returning and hold no real belief in the religion they once again want to become part of.
Rabbi Gutierrez provides a comprehensive historical look at the Crypto-Jews of Spain while painting a scholarly and coherent analysis of the many complex issues they faced. Secret Jews is definitely a must read if you have an interest in the Spanish Inquisition. I found that the chapters discussing modern day controversies regarding the religious perspectives of Conversos fueled my interest to further investigate the works of Benzion Netanyahu, Yitzhak Baer and others. All in all, this book is a good read. I highly recommend it.
