Once upon a time I read DEAR MR. KNIGHTLEY by Katherine Reay because it was inspired by Jean Webster's delightful DADDY LONG LEGS. Reay's book was an okay read, although not as inspiring as Webster's original. So when I saw this new Reay novel offered as an Amazon Vine ARC I decided to try it. After all, I love books and so how could I miss with a book about books and a bookshop?Yeah, no. It didn't live up to my expectations. Too superficial, with unappealing characters living boring, shallow lives. There are references to books, but of mediocre quality for the most part (IMO), with a few exceptions. And puzzling, inadequate motivations for some of the characters' behavior. This is squeaky clean women's lit with three main characters: 30-something frustrated lawyer Madeline, 40-something Claire, unfulfilled wife and mother, and 50-something Janet, divorced and ostracized by family and friends because she was the injuring, not the injured, party in the divorce. They all come together and begin to heal in their lives through the magic of working together in The Printed Letter Bookshop which Madeline inherits from her late aunt Maddie and in which Claire and Janet had been Maddie's employees.Maddie leaves a confidential letter to each woman with a reading list for each. Apparently Maddie, a wonderful, insightful, altruistic, all-knowing woman, was beloved by the whole town and always knew how to help everyone and just what books to recommend to customers of the bookshop. Saintly and woo-woo, I guess. Now, posthumously, she wants these three women to read the appropriate books to help them get on with their lives.Yeah, whatever. We never even learn the names of the books on each woman's reading list, so I wasn't impressed. Nor was I impressed with these three shallow, whiny women with their petty little problems. Perhaps romance lovers will like this and be happy to know that all three women find some contentment in their lives and their love lives. Not necessarily deserved, IMO, but, whatever. This book brought out a lot of "whatevers" from me. I just didn't care. About the women. About the story. And the plot exposition divided into sections from each woman's POV didn't work all that well for me. Madeline and Janet had 1st-person POV sections, Claire mostly 3rd-person POV except for the very last one from her. It was all a bit messy and felt a bit disjointed, especially at the very beginning when I was still trying to get into the rhythm of the story.Whatever. If you like somewhat shallow, superficial inspiration, you'll find it here. Learning to forgive (yourself and others), learning to understand yourself, building friendships, moving on with your life, helping others, yada, yada.

Katherine Reay’s THE PRINTED LETTER BOOKSHOP has life changes, romance, and, yes, some gentle mystery in one package. Madeline is an attorney in Chicago. She is up to make full partner, but someone else is selected. But a twist of fate – inheriting her Aunt Maddie’s book shop (and please call it a “book shop” – friendlier and more personal, a small business). Madeline discovers that Aunt Maddie had sacrificed her own savings to keep the book shop afloat and pay the two employees, Claire and Janet. Madeline was more interested in belongings – art and furnishings – than money and sells many of these off to try to bring in some funding. Madeline also does some reduced-cost legal work from a store room in the book store to help people in the community. Did I mention romance? Yes. The ladies of the book shop do find new loves in their lives, and it’s not what readers might expect. Did I mention “gentle mystery?” The book shop is heavily vandalized the day after Valentine’s Day. I was eager to find out who did this and why, and whether the vandals would face consequences, particularly since Aunt Maddie had no insurance against such incidents. Those who love books, those who appreciate what small businesses do, those who like a small town “feel” (even though it seems that the book shop is in a suburb of Chicago) will delight in this book.

What an interesting story of three women of varied ages who are drawn together through the love of a woman named Maddie. Maddie owns the Printed Letter Bookshop. She employs two of the women. The third woman is her niece. Maddie passes away and leaves the store to her niece, Madeline. Madeline is a successful lawyer and earning a good salary. But what will happen when she inherit's a bookstore that is not making money, but is effecting the lives of a whole community. Madeline will discover that her Aunt was loved by the whole community, not because she was a great business woman but because she was a caring, loving person who accepted everyone and had a heart to help everyone. The three woman grow a relationship together that crosses ages, cultures, stereotypes, etc. The story of love and compassion grows and you find yourself wishing that you had a community like these three women have. A community of acceptance, of love, of friendship. There is nothing spectacular about this novel, except that it true to real life and draws you in as you discover that you want friends like this.It is a great holiday read.Oh, and the last three pages of the book list a section of books that we all should read. I've looked that list over and have already started to order books from the list that I have yet to read but should probably read.Enjoy!
